What is Product Management?

Product management is the business process of planning, developing, launching, and managing a product or service. It includes the entire lifecycle of a product, from ideation to development to go to market.

Simply put, Product Management is the series of activities that individuals and organizations engage in from the moment a Product Idea is conceived to the time the Product becomes a tangible valuable entity in the hands of the customers and even beyond that.

Now let’s attempt to explain Who a Product Manager is.

According to Atlassian,

A product manager is the person who identifies the customer need and the

larger business objectives that a product or feature will fulfill, articulates

what success looks like for a product, and rallies a team to turn that vision

into a reality.

In reality, the identification of customer needs or a potential opportunity can come from anywhere (CEO, management, board members, even the janitor).

However, after that customer need or opportunity is identified, somebody must be responsible for fine tuning it and bringing it into reality.

That person is the Product Manager.

In the Digital/Software Space, the Product Manager stands at the intersection of the customer, the business organization and the technologies that the product is developed with.

The Product manager interfaces with every party and stakeholder involved in taking the product from idea stage to market
